TEEMI identifies adolescent mothers who are determined to go back to formal schools or
vocational training. TEEMI pays for their school fees, and provides them with uniform, school
bags, mattresses, books and all the school requirements that would enable them to access
education.

Advocating for Adolescent Girls’ Rights

Uganda has signed international conventions that protect the girls and advance their rights and
TEEMI is working actively to bringing these rights to life in communities.
We do this by convening meetings with community members and we disseminate laws and
policies that protect adolescent girls. We also work with the law enforcement agencies to punish
men who sexually abuse underage girls, and connect lawyers with families to educate girls about
their rights. By creating a good environment where we have champions among parents to support
teenage mothers, we are gradually changing these norms and ensuring that girls can thrive and
live a healthy life full of opportunities to succeed. Together with communities, education
institutions, health facilities and other stakeholders, we ensure that adolescent mothers have
access to various services that they can tap in to improve their lives.

Sexual Health Education

Working with schools, we are supporting comprehensive sexuality education to inform girls
about their bodies, changes during puberty, how pregnancy occurs, how to prevent pregnancies
and linking them to health facilities to receive more information and health services.
According to WHO early pregnancy is the second cause of death among adolescent girls. It is
therefore important that they have all the information and contraceptives if they are sexually
active instead of having them become pregnant, try to secure an illegal abortion, suffer
permanent injuries, or be forced into a marriage. We work hand-in-hand with health providers to
ensure that when girls come to the health facility they can access care without judgment or
discrimination.

Economic Empowerment

TEEMI empowers teenage mothers through skills Training and Business Start-Up.
TEEMI supports adolescent mothers who would like to build their skills through vocational
training. Over the years, TEEMI has helped many adolescent mothers to undergo training in
tailoring, hairdressing, horticulture, animal husbandry, soap and detergent making, fish farming
and poultry farming. Some have taken up catering, knitting and phone repairs. All these have
helped the adolescent mothers to initiate various income generating activities in their
communities.

Networking and Advocacy

TEEMI holds networking meetings with adolescent mothers and educates them about their
rights. TEEMI holds holiday camps, have created safe spaces in the communities and linked with
gender-based violence organizations to support teenage mothers. Adolescent mothers meet in
safe spaces to share their challenges in a safe and secure place, support each other, cry together,
play and get counseling services. During holidays, safe spaces are a place where teenage mothers
can come to read, do assignments and get mentorship and coaching. Teenage mothers have
formed very supportive networks that help them withstand challenges and face the future with
confidence. We do advocacy at local, national and international levels to ensure that the rights of
teenage mothers are respected, protected and promoted
